The Yuma Proving Ground is the widest military bases in the world and located far away from any human communities. Their primary focus is support of aerial weapons training for the Atlantic and Pacific Fleet Marine Forces and Navy. Located in the southwest corner of AZ, it serves as home to several squadrons including the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing, the MAWTS-1 (Marine Aviation Weapons and Tactics Squadron 1) and VMFT-401 (Marine Fighter Training Squadron. ![]() MCAS Yuma spreads across 3,000 acres of desert and wilderness. As the F-35A Fighter slowly replaces active F-16 Falcon aircraft, Luke AFB is transitioning to be the primary pilot training center for this newest multi-role aircraft. The 56th FW is the largest fighter wing in the world. It’s also home to the 56th Fighter Wing, Operations, Maintenance, Medical and Mission Support groups. Luke turns out close to 500 pilots and 700 technicians each year for deployment all over the globe. It is known to be the only base to train F-16 Falcon pilots. Luke AFB is one of the largest in the world, operating close to Phoenix and Glendale AZ. They train over 100 students annually for Combat Air Forces and provide quality assurance for contracts assessed at over $5.7 million. All personnel here work hard to support Combatant Commanders anywhere in the world at any time. It is also home to the 354th and 357th Fighter Squadrons, the 355th Operations Support Squadron and the 355th Training Squadron. The 355th at DM has five squadrons and more than 300 personnel working with 83 A-10C aircraft and an AN/TPS-75 radar system.
